Advanced Hip Arthroscopy and Revision Surgery
Testimonial:"I wish I had gone to Dr. Hyman the first time. I didn't know I didn't have to keep living with that pain. When he fixed my hip, I could tell the difference right away."
Advanced Techniques of Hip Arthroscopy are being pioneered each year. As the Medical Director of The Advanced Orthopedic Surgery Center, Dr. Jon Hyman plays a leadership role in this emerging technology.
With increased visibility of professional athletes (esp. MLB players like A-rod, Chase Utley, Mike Lowell etc.) having to undergo arthroscopic surgery of the hip, patients are becoming more aware of the procedure. The arthroscopic surgery is beginning to make surgeons take notice as well.
Hip arthroscopy is becoming more popular (see 2009 USA Today article), but not necessarily safer. Although only a few surgeons are properly trained to perform hip arthroscopy and use the highly specialized instruments, there is a growing number of doctors who are starting to perform the surgery. With the increasing frequency of hip arthroscopy procedures being done in Georgia and the Carolinas, Alabama, Tennessee and Florida, Dr. Hyman's practice is taking on more and more re-do hip arthroscopy surgeries (repeat or revision surgeries).
Literature and Research on Revision Hip Arthroscopy Surgery:
- Radiologic and Intra-operative Findings in Revision Hip Arthroscopy: unaddressed bony impingement and labral tears with iliopsoas tendon pathology were the primary reasons for needing repeated surgery.
- Revision Hip Arthroscopy. Persistent FAI was the most common reason for needing a revision hip arthroscopy surgery.
FemoroAcetabular Impingement (FAI) and Hip Arthroscopy for FAI:
Having to re-do the surgery is not only costly and time consuming for the patient; it is also somewhat more risky. This is because Dr. Hyman has to operate through scar tissue and altered anatomy. Fixing the original problem as well as the additional problems from the first surgery makes the overall task technically more challenging and the surgery can take longer.
